ENVIS Resource Partner “Wildlife and Protected Areas” at the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun participated in the National Level Ganga Prahari Workshop held from 11-13 March 2018 in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand. The workshop was organized by the Biodiversity Conservation and Ganga Rejuvenation Project.
The aim of the participation in the National level Ganga workshop was to strengthen the collaboration of the ENVIS RP with the Ganga Project for future Green Skill Development Programme. The ENVIS RP will undertake Skill Development Training Programme of Ganga Praharis. The Ganga Praharis are from villages and towns situated on the banks of the River Ganga and will be empowered to act as its sentinels and work to achieve the greater goal of making Ganga clean.
This National Level workshop was attended by Ganga Praharis from 5 Ganga states viz. Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal. Altogether 150 Ganga Praharis were interviewed. Also, in attendance were various resource persons from States Programme Management Groups SPMGs, National Mission Clean Ganga (NMCG), NGOs etc. They were familiarized with the Green Skill Development Programme (GSDP) and a Need Based Assessment was carried by the ENVIS RP among the participants. This assessment will be useful to decide specific skills to be imparted to Ganga Praharis. Along with this, discussions were also held for future collaborations to organize the GSDP in various states.
