Celebration of International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, 16 September 2024

The Montreal Protocol is widely regarded as a triumph of multilateral cooperation, successfully rallying nations to eliminate ozone-depleting substances and set the ozone layer on a course for recovery, safeguarding life on Earth. As we observe World Ozone Day 2024, we also recognize its significant contributions to climate action. The global commitment to phasing out ozone-depleting substances has not only aided in the restoration of the ozone layer but has also emerged as an effective strategy for mitigating climate change. This collective effort has delayed the onset of an ice-free Arctic summer by as much as 15 years, showcasing the interconnectedness of ozone protection and climate stability. On this day, we celebrate these achievements and reaffirm our commitment to continued action for a healthier planet.

To celebrate World Ozone Day 2024 and raise widespread awareness about the importance of protecting the ozone layer, the EIACP Centre at the Wildlife Institute of India has created an engaging poster and organized an informative quiz. The poster visually highlights the critical role of the ozone layer in shielding life on Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation, illustrating the successes of the Montreal Protocol and the ongoing need for vigilance in environmental protection. The accompanying quiz is designed to educate participants about ozone-depleting substances, their impacts on health and the environment, and the significance of international cooperation in addressing these challenges.
