World Lion Day, 10 August, 2017


Every year  10th August is celebrated as World Lion Day to create awareness on the only remaining species of Lion Panthera leo (1 subspecies found in India - Asiatic lion, 10 subspecies found in Africa- African lion). In India, the only wild population of Asiatic lion resides at Gir National Park, Gujarat. These the large carnivorous mammals and prey upon mammals viz. wild pig, Nilgai, Chital, Sambar and domestic cattle.

The ENVIS Centre on ‘Wildlife and Protected Areas’ celebrated World Lion Day and brought out a wildlife graphic poster on this occasion.
